Engineering Intern
Position Summary
APA Advisory Services, LLC is seeking a motivated Engineering Intern to join our Power Delivery team. This internship provides hands-on experience in utility substation engineering, with a focus on protection and control (P&C) design for electrical substations. Working under the guidance of experienced licensed professional engineer (PE), the intern will gain practical exposure to engineering design principles, utility standards, and project execution while contributing to real-world engineering projects.
This position is designed as a structured learning opportunity for students pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline and offers valuable experience in the utility consulting industry.
Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of a licensed and experienced engineer, the Engineering Intern will:
• Assist in the development of electrical protection and control design packages for utility substation projects.
• Support the preparation of one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC schematics, DC elementary diagrams, and relay panel wiring drawings.
• Assist with physical substation design, including equipment layouts, control building arrangements, grounding plans, and raceway layouts.
• Prepare engineering drawings, wiring schedules, cable schedules, and bills of material.
• Assist with engineering calculations and technical documentation for substation design projects.
• Review utility standards, equipment specifications, and engineering drawings to ensure compliance with project requirements.
• Support the preparation of procurement documents and equipment specifications.
• Participate in internal design reviews and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) processes.
• Attend project meetings and collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Perform engineering research and assist in developing technical reports and project documentation.
• Complete other engineering assignments as directed by the project engineer or engineering manager.

Qualifications
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
• Completed coursework in power systems, electrical circuits, smart automation or protection and control is preferred.
• Strong interest in utility, power delivery, and substation engineering.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience with AutoCAD or other engineering design software is preferred but not required.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
• Eagerness to learn and develop professionally through mentorship and hands-on engineering experience.
